Fulton County Schools
It takes a village to raise a child, and schools are an integral part of that by providing students with a place to learn and grow. Fulton County Schools’ (FSC) social workers fill a unique role, serving as the link between home, school, and community. When students face obstacles that affect their home lives, mental health, and academic careers, a school social worker is ready to help.
With the rising cost of living, many families face financial hardship, which affects a student’s ability to concentrate and learn. Thanks to your generosity during last year’s Be Rich campaign, FCS is able to support families through the use of an emergency fund. Because of this fund, social workers are able to serve students’ families the day, and sometimes the hour, they have a need. They offer support by providing gift cards for groceries, gas, hygiene items, and transportation solutions.
This year, FCS has already served over 400 families, almost 200 of whom were homeless. One family lost everything in a fire this past November, and the mom is unable to work due to medical complications. Another family has been displaced for a period of time with no transportation. The mom recently started a new job and is trying to make ends meet. Yet another family faces homelessness with the recent loss of their father. Some students are unaccompanied minors who have nowhere else to turn.
“We have the relationships. We know the students. But until we had this support, we couldn’t help them,” said Chelsea from the FCS Office of Student Supports. “We are only able to do this because of the fund.” By providing funds that help schools meet the basic needs of their students and families, you are helping create an atmosphere where students can both excel and feel supported.
