Centennial High School: Snacks
It's no secret that the pandemic posed a unique set of challenges for high school students. This was true for a number of students at Centennial High School. The school began to look for additional ways to support its seniors who were not on track to graduate but who hoped to achieve success. North Point Community Church has been involved in school mentorship for the last seven years and began a new partnership with Centennial High School in 2021 to help students seeking to graduate get back on track.
Each week, volunteer mentors meet with their mentees and work toward their graduation goals. In the 2021–22 school year, 10 mentors from North Point met with Centennial students, and in the 2022–23 school year, that number increased to 21. Although most of the mentors are helping seniors, some assist students in lower grades to help preempt potential graduation issues.
Lee Nicholson has mentored at Centennial for years. He met his mentee two or three times each week to support him through five extra courses on top of his regular class load. After months of hard work to catch up, Lee’s mentee graduated in May 2023. Lee proudly gifted him with online business courses to support his mentee’s self-employment aspirations following graduation. The impact of mentors like Lee goes far beyond educational knowledge and achievement. Students grow in confidence, learn how to utilize their talents, and gain a dedicated advocate who deeply believes in them.
In addition to the support from mentors, your generosity through Be Rich provided snack boxes for Saturday tutoring sessions. These sessions are vital to students who need to catch up on their courses. Volunteers helped students in math, science, history, and language arts. Additionally, North Point InsideOut provided gifts to the diligent teachers at Centennial as a token of gratitude for their tireless work. Thank you for partnering with Centennial and for investing in the next generation.
