Sleep In Heavenly Peace: Bed Build
“We’re not in the bed storage business. We’re in the business of making sure kids sleep in a bed of their own tonight.” –Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP)
For most of us, it’s easy to take our bed for granted, but for thousands of children in Gwinnett County, a bed of their own isn’t part of their nightly routine. Instead, they curl up on a couch, share with a parent or sibling, or lie on a pile of blankets on the floor.
That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace steps in. Entirely volunteer-run, SHP builds and delivers beds—complete with bedding—to children who don’t have one of their own.
Last year through Be Rich, Gwinnett Church volunteers came together for a one-day “Bed Build” that produced 99 beds.
The build site buzzed with energy. Kids worked alongside parents and grandparents. “It was noisy, dusty, hard work,” SHP said, “but it was exactly what Christ calls us to do.”
For SHP, it was the result of a partnership that began the year before when GC provided funding that doubled their capacity for volunteers, enabling them to host over 130 volunteers at a single build. “That gift didn’t just buy tools,” SHP said. “It opened the door for more people to be part of the solution—and that’s when real change happens.”
The true heart of SHP’s mission comes after the build: delivering each bed to a child’s home and watching their face light up when they see it for the first time. Thanks to the surge of help from Gwinnett Church, SHP delivered 133 beds between late October and Christmas—more than they typically deliver in an entire year.
Serving with Be Rich means joining hundreds of others who believe we best show love through action; every act of service, no matter how small, has the power to ripple through a community. Whether you have a few hours or a full day, together we can be the hands and feet of Jesus in our neighborhoods—because when we serve, lives change, including our own.
