Habitat for Humanity: Home Matters Mortgage Relief Fund

Meet Dorothy.

Dorothy is part of the team at Atlanta Habitat for Humanity that empowers low-income families to pursue homeownership and financial education while revitalizing neighborhoods throughout Atlanta.

Dorothy walks with clients through the home buying process and helps them see their dreams realized. It’s not a simple process. Homebuyers must complete financial education courses and home interviews. And, they must contribute over 250 volunteer hours toward their home build and the mission of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity!

After all that, when COVID-19 caused countless men and women to lose income or lose their jobs entirely, some homeowners faced the choice of paying their mortgage or putting food on the table. Many were in danger of losing the houses for which they had worked so hard.

That’s the last thing people like Dorothy want to see. And that’s why Atlanta Habitat for Humanity launched their Home Matters Mortgage Relief Fund. They’ve helped over 270 homeowners keep paying their mortgages despite job loss, furloughs, and financial uncertainty.

“Home is just as important as it was before the pandemic, if not more,” said Dorothy. “It’s an immeasurable gift to be able to take this pressure off of people. This wasn’t something we planned for in our budget for 2020, so it’s fully funded by our sponsors. The reason people got to stay in their homes is because of your donations.”

Thanks to your generosity through 2020’s Be Rich campaign, we were able to make a donation to the Home Matters Fund and help our neighbors in need stay in their homes, provide for their families, and rebuild after a challenging year.
