Furniture Bank: Fire Recovering

Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta exists to help individuals and families turn a house into a home. They support people as they rebuild and establish stable housing after experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or even recovering from a fire.

This past summer, Furniture Bank faced a situation that was all too familiar to some of their clients. Early in the morning on June 18, flames engulfed their warehouse, reducing over 800 mattresses, 500 dressers, and countless other household essentials to ash.

These items weren’t just furniture—they were the foundation of stability for hundreds of individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. While no one was harmed, the devastation marked the greatest challenge in the organization’s 37-year history.

“I actually thought of Buckhead Church a lot during the day of the fire,” said Megan Anderson, Executive Director of Furniture Bank. “I felt so helpless as we watched, but knowing that we had people like you in our corner gave me hope and faith that everything would be okay.”

That hope quickly turned into action. Thanks to your generosity through last year’s Be Rich campaign, Buckhead Church was able to give an emergency relief donation to help Furniture Bank get back to serving clients.

Within one week, their drivers were back on the road, delivering beds to families who otherwise would have been sleeping on bare floors. Furniture Bank secured a temporary warehouse and resumed collecting donations on July 7, just three weeks after the fire. By August 7, 122 households received complete furniture packages—beds, dressers, tables, and more—transforming empty spaces into homes filled with dignity and comfort. This rapid recovery wouldn’t have been possible without the ongoing generosity and support of their community partners, like Buckhead Church and Be Rich.

“Every piece of furniture built, and every dollar donated, makes a direct impact on a family’s life,” Megan emphasized. “As a small organization, we simply couldn’t support as many families as we do without Buckhead Church.”

If you want to support Furniture Bank as they serve our community, you can help them continue to rebuild by donating your gently used furniture. Thanks to your generosity, families across Atlanta—and Furniture Bank—are getting a second chance to build a lasting home.
