KIPP Woodson Park Academy: 8th Grade Field Trip

When Do you remember the first time you traveled outside your hometown? Or your home state?

Stepping outside the familiar and experiencing new places and cultures is an important step for all of us as we grow up. It can show us new ideas and possibilities and help us grow in our understanding of the world around us.

This is a pivotal experience that KIPP Woodson Park Academy (KWPA) was eager to provide for their 8th graders. They hoped to take the class on a trip to commemorate the end of the year, but the cost of transportation, lodging, food, and activities was much higher than the school’s budget for the field trip.

Through the Be Rich campaign, we were able to fund a trip to Washington, D.C., for the 8th grade class at KWPA! This past May, they traveled by bus to learn about their country and government and see many of the monuments and sites they learned about in class. Your generosity covered all the trip expenses, making it possible for every interested student to attend.

“For many of these students, it’s the first [time] they’re leaving the state—[for] some of them, even the neighborhood,” said Tara Stifler, one of the principals at KWPA. “For a lot of them, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip.”

Trips like these open students up to a bigger world. KWPA strives to give their students new opportunities and experiences, and, thanks to you, they were able to take that one step further last year.

“It’s far beyond money, what you’re giving our scholars,” said Tara. “It’s truly something that will last and live within them for the rest of their lives.”
