Atlanta Mission: COVID Temporary Staff

Meet Daryl.

Daryl moved to Atlanta looking for a place to start over after devastating hurricanes pushed him out of the Virgin Islands. A friend recommended Atlanta Mission to him and it set him on a journey of personal development and service as he took on leadership roles during his time as a resident.

Fast forward to today and Daryl is part of the team responsible for ensuring the over 2,400 men, women, and children that Atlanta Mission serves each year have a hot meal when they walk through the door. In 2020, Atlanta Mission served over 656,000 meals—a statistic made even more impressive when you realize the challenges they were up against.

When COVID-19 hit our city, Atlanta Mission, like everyone, had to reinvent itself overnight, and they had a big problem. They still had thousands of clients they needed to serve, but it was no longer safe to bring in the hundreds of volunteers that normally make those meals possible.

It was a big problem, but it was also a big opportunity to be FOR ATL.

Atlanta Mission put their Emergency Workforce Program into action and hired Daryl and five other former and current residents to be full-time staff in their kitchens and meet the needs of their clients. It was an overwhelming success.

Not only do these jobs make Atlanta Mission more efficient than ever but they provide clients with vocational training, the opportunity to take greater responsibility, and a way to gain valuable work experience.

Through 2021’s  Be Rich campaign, we were able to fund the salaries of this team for a year—including Daryl who is now the acting kitchen manager. Your generosity is continuing to provide jobs and help Atlanta Mission do even more in 2021.

Thank you for being FOR ATL through the Be Rich campaign!
